Adjusting the brakes on reels with the Multi-Setting Brake (MSB) system
There are 2 separate braking systems on these reels, an externally adjusted magnetic system and an internally adjusted centrifugal system. Having these 2 systems allows you to highly tune the casting performance of your reel.
Magnetic brakes are designed to give a constant resistance (braking) on the spool throughout the entire cast. Turning the magnetic dial moves the magnets closer or further from the spool depending on how much braking the angler needs. Proportionally, this system is more effective toward the end of the cast than the beginning.
Lew’s centrifugal braking systems are designed to provide initial braking at the beginning of the cast to prevent backlash. Our models have spring loaded pins that on the beginning of the cast protrude out, then retract back in about half-way through the cast. To turn a brake off, push the tab toward the center of the spool until it clicks into place. To turn it on, push the tab toward the rim of the spool until it clicks. This system has more effect at the beginning of the cast than the end.
The reel should come from the factory with the centrifugal brakes set with 2 on and 2 off. We recommend starting the magnetic system at the halfway point. Make a cast. If the line chokes at the end of the cast, back the magnetic braking off. If it is backlashy, tighten it up. If you have an issue at the beginning of the cast, increase or decrease the number of brakes that are on to compensate.
